Learning to co-create the good life

The Colombian team are working with the Council of Sustainable Settlements of the Americas (CASA) and the Colombian Convergence of Permaculture (CCP), following the emergence of these self-organising bioregional networks. This involves developing several bio-regional social learning classrooms to promote, investigate and disseminate re-generative lifestyles. The nexus issues addressed include food sovereignty, climate change, post-conflict peace building and extractivism. Methods involve extended inter-cultural events which are participatory and demonstrative of the lived experiences for co-creating the good life.

Team members

The Colombian case study focuses on the co-production of knowledge, capacity building, with importance placed on participatory methods and the important role of co-researchers. The research team is comprised of the following classes: lead researcher, coordinator,  bioregional co-researchers, and internship student:

Lead researcher:  Thomas Macintyre:  Thomas has a double Bachelor degree in economics and genetics from the University of Otago, New Zealand and a Masters degree in International Development Studies, specializing in rural studies from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. He is  currently a PhD candidate in Education and Competence studies at Wageningen University. Thomas is the lead researcher in charge of the meta-analysis of bioregional data in the Colombia t-learning programme. He coordinates and aligns research questions, facilitates the construction of shared methodologies with co-researchers from the different bio-regions, and follows and investigates national gatherings of CASA and CCP. Thomas is also in charge of the national T-Labs.

Project coordinator:  Martha Chaves: Martha is a Biologist from Universidad del Valle, Colombia, with a Masters in Forest and Nature Conservation, specializing in Community Based Conservation from Wageningen University; currently finishing her PhD studies in Sociology of Development and Change at Wageningen University. Martha is the project coordinator, in charge of the logistics and administration of the Colombian case. She is also a co-researcher for the bio-region Quimbaya, see below.

Bio-regional co-researchers: Bio-regional co-researchers who are in charge of research in each bioregion, helping to construct the network and in charge of each bio-regional T-lab:

  • Margarita Zethelius (Bioregión Caribe): Biologist from the Universidad Nacional, Colombia, with a Masters in Conservation and Rural Development from Kent University, England.
  • Tania Laisuna (Bioregión Macizo Acogedor): Social Entrepreneur; Director of the Corporation ‘Nuj-Jay’, which deals with restoration of social tissue through art.
  • Nathaly Hernandez (Bioregión Macizo Acogedor): Psychologist specialized in Latin American Studies, currently undertaking a Masters in Intercultural studies at the Unversidad del Cauca, Colombia.
  • Tatiana Monroy (Bioregión Muisca-Bakatá): Educator, co-founder of the Ecovillage Aldeafeliz, she is an expert in methodologies of community living such as sociocracy, dragon dreaming and non-violent communication.

  • Bioregión Montañeros (To be defined)

Capacity building internship: Carlos Bacca: Bachelor student at the University of Los Andes, Bogotá, who is carrying out his internship with Foundation ‘Mentes en Transicion’ into T-Learning processes in the Colombian Permaculture Movement.
