Fundisa for Change
The Fundisa for Change programme aims to strengthen transformative environmental and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) learning in teacher education within the Curriculum framework of South Africa, and a broader Education for Sustainable Development framework through a co-ordinated, participatory, national system of engagement.
The Fundisa for Change courses are specially designed to strengthen the integration of the principle on human rights, social justice, inclusivity and a healthy environment into the teaching of CAPS in ways that support transformative learning, as well as transform learning environments, allowing teachers and learners to contribute to building environmentally sustainable and healthy schools and society, as envisaged in the South African Curriculum and Constitution.
Established in South Africa since 2013, Fundisa for Change is a multi-stakeholder collaborative national professional learning community that involves environmental and education organisations from Government, Higher Education Institutions, Government Entities, Business and NGO’s. From the year of its launch in 2013 until 2025, Fundisa for Change has produced 20 online courses, benefiting more than 1,000 teachers in the country.
Although the programme has a national coordinator based at SANBI to manage and administer the programme, it operates under an emergent consortium structure, initially involving a partnership between the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, SANBI’s GreenMatter Programme and national teacher education institutions, and partners.
It is also supported by the South African Research Chairs Initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and National Research Foundation of South Africa, in particular the NRF SARChI Chair in Global Change and Social Learning Systems at Rhodes University.
