The Sustainability Starts with Teacher Leaders

Building on the T-learning for Teacher Educators, and the Sustainability Starts with Teachers programme implemented by RU ELRC and UNESCO ROSA, a new project focusing on T-learning for Teacher Educators, has recently been launched (in 2025) with new partners, and funding from the European Union to take further and expand the SST programme. 

The new project draws on the same T-learning change project model for teacher education, and is named the Sub-Saharan Africa Teacher Leadership for Education for Sustainable Development (SSATL-ESD) or ‘Sustainability Starts with Teacher Leaders’ project is a transformative initiative aimed at strengthening teacher leadership in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region.  

This multi-country collaboration involves 15 institutions from Sub Saharan Africa and Europe, co-ordinated by Leuphana University Lüneburg in Germany and Rhodes University in South Africa, and is funded by the European Commission. It aims to empower educators and teacher leaders with competencies to improve the next generation’s knowledge, skills, and values for sustainable development, green economies, and culturally diverse and inclusive societies.  The team that was involved in the SST are also leading this programme at country level, but this time we have additional partners from Europe, and East Africa.
